Akhilesh Yadav is an Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to 2017. Born on July 1, 1973, in Saifai, Uttar Pradesh, he is the son of Mulayam Singh Yadav, a prominent figure in Indian politics and founder of the Samajwadi Party. Akhilesh received his early education in Uttar Pradesh and later pursued a bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of Mysore. He further obtained a master's degree in environmental engineering from the University of Sydney, Australia.
His political career began in 2000 when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kannauj. He continued to represent the constituency in 2004 and 2009. During his time as a Member of Parliament, he served on various committees, gaining experience in legislative matters and policymaking. In 2012, he was appointed as the president of the Samajwadi Party's Uttar Pradesh unit.
At the age of 38, Akhilesh Yadav became the youngest Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2012. During his tenure, he focused on infrastructure development, education, and social welfare programs. His government launched initiatives such as the Lucknow Metro, AgraLucknow Expressway, and Samajwadi Pension Yojana. While his administration faced challenges related to law and order, he was credited with promoting a more modern and developmentoriented image of the Samajwadi Party. In the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party lost power to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Since then, Akhilesh Yadav has served as the Leader of Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly and continues to be a prominent figure in Uttar Pradesh politics, striving to revive his party's prospects.
