Anandi Gopal Joshi, often regarded as India's first female physician trained in Western medicine, led a life marked by both extraordinary achievement and profound personal challenges. Born Yamuna Joshi in 1865 in Kalyan, Maharashtra, she was married at the young age of nine to Gopalrao Joshi, a widower nearly twenty years her senior. Gopalrao, a progressive thinker for his time, strongly believed in women's education and took on the responsibility of educating Anandi himself. He recognized her intellectual potential and encouraged her to pursue a career in medicine, an unconventional ambition for a woman in 19thcentury India.

Facing considerable social opposition and health issues, Anandi persevered in her studies. Gopalrao's unwavering support, though sometimes expressed in demanding ways, was crucial to her journey. He corresponded with various missionaries and individuals in America, seeking opportunities for Anandi to study abroad. In 1883, despite her frail health, Anandi embarked on a journey to the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania, where she pursued her medical degree.

During her time in America, she adopted the name Anandi and embraced the challenges of a new culture and rigorous academic environment. She completed her medical degree in 1886, graduating with a thesis on obstetrics among Aryan Hindu women. Her graduation was widely celebrated, both in the United States and in India, as a symbol of women's empowerment and the breaking of societal barriers. However, her health continued to deteriorate. Returning to India, she was appointed as the physicianincharge of the female ward at the Albert Edward Hospital in Kolhapur. Sadly, her life was cut short by tuberculosis, and she passed away in 1887 at the young age of 21. Despite her brief life, Anandi Gopal Joshi's legacy continues to inspire generations of women in India and around the world to pursue their dreams and challenge societal norms.
