Anna Mani Family Tree

Anna Mani was a highly accomplished Indian physicist and meteorologist whose contributions significantly advanced the field of meteorological instrumentation in India. Born in 1918 in Travancore, now part of Kerala, she demonstrated a keen interest in science from a young age. Mani pursued her Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Chemistry from Presidency College, Madras, followed by postgraduate studies at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, where she worked under the guidance of Nobel laureate Sir C. V. Raman, specializing in spectroscopy. Her work focused on the optical properties of diamonds and rubies.

Driven by a passion for meteorology, Mani pursued further studies in the field at Imperial College, London. Upon returning to India, she joined the India Meteorological Department (IMD), where she played a pivotal role in modernizing the country's weather forecasting capabilities. She was instrumental in standardizing meteorological instruments and establishing a network of radiation monitoring stations across India. Her dedication to accuracy and precision led to the indigenous production of numerous meteorological instruments, reducing India's reliance on foreign imports.

Mani's contributions extended beyond instrumentation. She conducted extensive research on solar radiation, ozone, and wind energy, publishing numerous research papers and contributing significantly to the understanding of these atmospheric phenomena. She was a strong advocate for renewable energy, particularly wind power, and actively promoted its development in India. Throughout her career, Anna Mani held several key positions within the IMD, retiring as Deputy Director General. Her work earned her numerous accolades and recognition, solidifying her legacy as a pioneering female scientist and a prominent figure in Indian meteorology.
