Asumal Sirumalani Harpalani, well known as Asaram Bapu, was born in Berani village, now in Pakistan’s Sindh province. After migrating to Gujarat post-Partition, he left formal education early and pursued a spiritual path. He claimed to have meditated in the Himalayas and received spiritual initiation from Guru Lilashah Bapu. Gaining fame in the 1970s, Asaram Bapu established over 400 ashrams and 40 gurukuls across India and abroad, becoming one of India’s most influential spiritual leaders. His discourses drew lakhs of followers, including politicians and businessmen, making him a revered figure in many parts of India.
However, Asaram Bapu's reputation collapsed after multiple criminal allegations. In 2008, the suspicious deaths of two boys at his gurukul drew national attention. In 2013, he was accused of raping a minor girl at his Jodhpur ashram. Following his arrest and trial, he was convicted in 2018 under the POCSO Act and sentenced to life imprisonment.
