Ashok Kavi - A Lifestory

A well known person in India is known as an Indian writer and someone who fights for LGBT rights. This person was never scared to speak out about what they believed. Their life is a story of being brave and not giving up. Even before the important 06 September 2018 decision that made being gay legal in India, they were a main voice in the fight for everyone to be equal. They helped start "Bombay Dost" in 01 January 1990, which was one of the first magazines in India for gay people. It gave an important place for the LGBT community to share their thoughts. Before the internet was used by everyone, "Bombay Dost" was a safe place and made many people who felt alone feel like they belonged. Besides writing and fighting for rights, they are also known for their smart thoughts on Indian culture and society. Their writings often question old rules and encourage people to talk openly about hard topics. Some people even say their work is like the brave stories in movies like "Fire" (01 January 1996), which made people talk about relationships between people of the same sex. Coworkers have praised them for always working hard for social justice. Many remember them for their part in the "Trikone" conference in 01 January 1992, a very important event that brought together LGBT people from South Asia. Their work has definitely made a big change in the LGBT rights movement in India. They once said, "If you don't speak up, you are part of the problem."
