• 🌱 Early Life
• Babulal Gaur was born as Baburam Yadav on 2 June 1929 in Naugir, Pratapgarh, United Provinces of British India (now Uttar Pradesh, India). His father, Ram Prasad Yadav, was a wrestler. Gaur moved to Bhopal during his childhood, where he grew up.
• He completed his Bachelor of Arts in 1958 and Bachelor of Laws in 1965 from Vikram University, Ujjain. Alongside politics, he was also an agriculturalist. The name “Babulal” originated during his school days in Bhopal to distinguish him from other students with the same name, and he adopted it permanently.
• 💼 Early Career
• Before entering active politics, Gaur worked in a liquor company and later at the Bhopal Textiles Mill. He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1946, which laid the foundation for his political ideology.
• Gaur began his political journey as a trade union leader, focusing on workers’ rights. Initially, he led protests through the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) and later joined the RSS-backed Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) as a founding member.
• In 1956, he became the Secretary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh. That year, he contested a city council election but did not win. In 1972, he contested from Govindpura but lost, setting the stage for his future political success.

• 🏛️ Entry into Legislative Politics
• In 1974, Babulal Gaur was elected to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Bhopal South in a by-election as an independent candidate supported by the Janata Party.
• He actively participated in national movements, including the agitation against the Emergency, the Goa liberation movement, and satyagrahas in Delhi, Punjab, and other states. During the Emergency, he was detained for 19 months under MISA.
• 📈 Political Rise
• Gaur won the 1977 election from Bhopal South as a Janata Party candidate. From 1980 onwards, he contested from Govindpura as a BJP candidate and won eight consecutive elections until 2013.
• He set records for victory margins in 1993 (59,666 votes) and 2003 (64,212 votes), demonstrating his strong support base. During the tenth Vidhan Sabha (1993–1998), he served as Chief Whip of BJP Legislature Party, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, and member of multiple legislative committees.
• ⚖️ Ministerial Roles
• From 7 March 1990 to 15 December 1992, Gaur held multiple portfolios, including Local Administration, Law and Legislative Affairs, Parliamentary Affairs, Public Relations, Urban Welfare, Housing (Urban) & Rehabilitation, and Bhopal Gas Relief.
• He served as the Leader of Opposition in Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha from 4 September 2002 to 7 December 2003.
• 🏛️ Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh
• After the resignation of Uma Bharti, Babulal Gaur became the 16th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh on 23 August 2004. He served until 29 November 2005, when Shivraj Singh Chouhan succeeded him.
• 🛠️ Later Political Career
• In 2008, he was appointed Minister for Commerce, Industries, Commercial Taxes, Employment, Public Undertakings, and Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief in Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s cabinet.
• He was elected to the 14th Vidhan Sabha from Govindpura in 2013 and took oath as a Cabinet Minister on 21 December 2013. Due to age and illness, he retired from politics in 2018, and his daughter-in-law, Krishna Gaur, succeeded him in Govindpura.
