Balasaraswati, a name synonymous with Bharatanatyam, was a towering figure in the realm of Indian classical dance. Born in Madras (now Chennai) in 1918 into a family steeped in the traditional arts, she was the seventh generation of dancers in a lineage dedicated to the Devadasi tradition. Her grandmother, Veena Dhanammal, was a renowned Carnatic musician, and her mother, Jayammal, was also a dancer and vocalist, providing a rich and nurturing artistic environment for Balasaraswati's early development. Her formal training began at the tender age of four, under the tutelage of Kandappa Pillai, a distinguished Nattuvanar (dance master).

Balasaraswati's debut performance, or Arangetram, took place when she was just seven years old at the Kamakshi Amman Temple in Kanchipuram. This marked the beginning of a remarkable career that spanned several decades. She quickly gained recognition for her exceptional talent, her profound understanding of the art form, and her captivating stage presence. Her dance was characterized by its depth of emotion, its nuanced expression, and its adherence to the traditional principles of Bharatanatyam.

She was instrumental in bringing Bharatanatyam to a wider audience, both within India and internationally. Balasaraswati received numerous accolades and awards throughout her career, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Padma Bhushan, and the Sangita Kalanidhi title from the Madras Music Academy. She passed away in 1984, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire dancers and art enthusiasts worldwide.
