Bikash Bhattacharjee - A Lifestory

He was more than just someone who painted; he was a person who told stories using his brush to show the real and often troubling parts of life in Kolkata. He was born in Calcutta in 1940, and his time as an artist started in India after it became free from British rule, a time of big changes in society and politics. He went to the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship to get better at art and create his own style that he would be known for later. His paintings, often called strange and scary, showed what life was like for normal people, how cities were falling apart, and the general feeling of worry that was everywhere. Think of him as the artist version of Satyajit Ray's real life movies, but with something weird added. He used to say, "Art should bother you, art should make you ask questions," and his art definitely did that. He became famous across the country in the 1970s and 1980s. His art, like a scene from a movie, made people stop and pay attention. Other artists liked him for his "true honesty and great skill." He has had a big impact on Indian art today, inspiring many new artists to look at the darker and more confusing parts of being human. He died in 2006, leaving behind a collection of strong and interesting art that people still talk about now.
