Birju Maharaj, a name synonymous with Kathak, was an Indian dancer, composer, singer and exponent of the Lucknow "KalkaBindadin" gharana of Kathak dance in India. Born Brij Mohan Nath Mishra on February 4, 1938, in Handia, Allahabad, he hailed from a lineage of accomplished Kathak dancers, inheriting a rich tradition from his father, Achhan Maharaj, and uncles, Lachhu Maharaj and Shambhu Maharaj. His early training began at the tender age of three, and he gave his first performance at the age of seven. By the time he was thirteen, he was teaching at the Sangeet Bharti in Delhi.

Maharaj ji, as he was fondly called, revolutionized Kathak, imbuing it with a new sense of drama and expressiveness. He was renowned for his emotive storytelling through dance, his mastery over rhythm and intricate footwork, and his ability to connect with audiences on a profound level. He expanded the vocabulary of Kathak, incorporating elements of thumri, dadra, and bhajan into his performances, making the dance form more accessible and appealing to contemporary audiences.

Beyond his dancing prowess, Birju Maharaj was a talented vocalist and percussionist. He often accompanied himself on the tabla and harmonium during his performances, showcasing his multifaceted artistic talents. Throughout his illustrious career, Birju Maharaj received numerous accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and the Kalidas Samman. He also choreographed for several Bollywood films, popularizing Kathak among a wider audience.
