Charu Bhattacharya Family Tree

Charu Bhattacharya was a prominent figure in the Indian sociopolitical landscape, particularly during the tumultuous period of the Naxalite movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He emerged as a key ideologue and leader, advocating for radical agrarian revolution and the overthrow of the existing socioeconomic order. Bhattacharya's political journey began with his involvement in communist politics, initially aligning himself with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M). However, he grew increasingly disillusioned with what he perceived as the party's revisionist tendencies and its deviation from the true MarxistLeninist path. This dissatisfaction led him to break away from the CPI(M) and become a founding member of the Communist Party of India (MarxistLeninist), or CPI(ML), in 1969.

Bhattacharya's ideology centered around the concept of armed struggle as the primary means of achieving social change. He believed that the peasantry, particularly the landless and impoverished, were the driving force of the revolution. His writings and speeches called for the seizure of land from landlords and the establishment of a "people's government" through revolutionary violence. The Naxalbari uprising in 1967, which saw peasants in West Bengal seizing land and engaging in armed clashes with authorities, deeply influenced Bhattacharya and became a model for his revolutionary strategy. He envisioned a nationwide uprising modeled after Naxalbari, aiming to dismantle the existing state apparatus and replace it with a communist regime. His revolutionary activities led to his arrest in 1974, and he died in police custody shortly after. He remains a controversial figure, revered by some as a revolutionary hero and criticized by others for his advocacy of violence.
