D. Doss Family Tree

Desmond Thomas Doss was an American combat medic who served in World War II. Born on February 7, 1919, in Lynchburg, Virginia, he was raised as a devout Seventhday Adventist. This faith deeply influenced his life, particularly his unwavering commitment to nonviolence and his refusal to carry a weapon. Despite facing significant pressure and ridicule, Doss enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 as a conscientious objector, determined to serve his country without compromising his religious beliefs. He was assigned to the 307th Infantry, 77th Infantry Division, and served as a medic.

Doss's extraordinary bravery and selflessness were most evident during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. On Hacksaw Ridge, a perilous escarpment, he repeatedly risked his own life to rescue wounded soldiers, singlehandedly pulling them to safety under heavy enemy fire. Over a period of several hours, he is credited with saving the lives of approximately 75 men. His actions were nothing short of heroic, and he performed these acts of courage without ever firing a shot.

Beyond Okinawa, Doss also served in the battles of Guam and Leyte, continually displaying exceptional courage and dedication to his fellow soldiers. He faced numerous dangers, including artillery fire, sniper attacks, and closequarters combat, always prioritizing the wellbeing of others. His unwavering faith and commitment to saving lives inspired his comrades and earned him their respect and admiration.

For his extraordinary heroism, Desmond Doss was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration for valor, by President Harry S. Truman on November 1, 1945. He was the first conscientious objector to receive this prestigious award. After the war, Doss continued to live a life of service and dedication to his faith. He passed away on March 23, 2006, leaving behind a legacy of courage, compassion, and unwavering faith that continues to inspire people around the world.
