Dilawar Babbar - A Lifestory
A Martyr For Khalistan, A Controversial Revolutionary, Forever Remembered

A person, known for causing disagreement, is mainly known for what he did in the killing of the top leader of Punjab, Beant Singh, on 31 August 1995. He was like a bomb that people use, in this attack. This event greatly changed the political scene at that time. Some people see him as a very bad person, but others, especially in some Sikh groups, think he died for a good cause, for a separate Sikh country called Khalistan. What he did is often linked to the hard times after Operation Blue Star in 1984, a military action by the Indian government at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. This event, and the riots against Sikhs that followed, made the idea of a separate country stronger, leading to more violence. He joined Babbar Khalsa International, a Sikh group that wanted to create Khalistan. The killing, which happened in Chandigarh, also caused the deaths of others besides the top leader, Beant Singh. This made the story about this person even more complex. The event caused much talk and disapproval. What he left behind is still a very touchy and divisive topic in Indian politics and Sikh history. Why he did what he did, whether he truly believed in it or was made to do it, is still being talked about and studied today, more than twenty years after the sad event.
