A respected biologist spent his life learning about nature. His journey started in 1988 when he finished college with a zoology degree. This early interest led him to get a PhD in ecology from Banaras Hindu University in 1995. His thesis, about how climate change affects mangrove areas, was praised for its new ways of working and important results. He worked on many big projects. His study of the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin in the Bay of Bengal, printed in Nature magazine in 2002, got him known worldwide. A friend said his work on the dolphins was amazing. His careful work and smart thinking helped us understand how to protect them. He's a great teacher too, guiding many students who now have good jobs in conservation. He's taught at the Wildlife Institute of India since 2010. His students say he's a fun and inspiring teacher. He's still a top expert, and his work affects conservation plans in India and other places. His talk on deforestation and animals at the International Conference on Biodiversity in 2018 is still important.
