Ebrahim Alkazi - A Lifestory
Visionary Director: Shaping Indian Theatre, Inspiring Generations

Someone was a big deal in Indian theater; they really changed things. They didn't just tell actors what to do; they built a whole system. They had a big idea about how to make theater better in India. They were born in 1925. They started doing important things way before 1962, when they became the head of the National School of Drama (NSD). They stayed in that job until 1977. They went to a school in London called the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). What they did had a big effect on others. They were very careful and paid close attention to detail. They knew a lot about theater from both the West and India. Because of this, other people in theater and the students they taught thought very highly of them. Some people thought they were tough but also very smart. They liked to try new things. The plays they put on looked amazing and made people think. For example, remember the plays 'Tughlaq' and 'Andha Yug'. One of their old students said it best: "They didn't just teach us about theater; they taught us how to look at the world in a new way." Even now, what they did still gives new actors and directors ideas. This shows that they were one of the first people to really make Indian theater what it is today. They died in 2020, and it will be hard to find someone to take their place.
