Elattuvalapil Sreedharan is a highly respected Indian civil engineer and bureaucrat, widely known for his transformative work in the field of infrastructure development. Born in 1932, he graduated as a civil engineer and joined the Indian Engineering Service. His career is marked by a series of successful projects, often undertaken in challenging circumstances and completed ahead of schedule. One of his earliest notable achievements was restoring the Pamban Bridge in Tamil Nadu, which had been severely damaged by a cyclone, in a remarkably short timeframe.

Sreedharan's reputation for efficiency and integrity solidified further with his leadership of the Konkan Railway project. This ambitious undertaking involved constructing a railway line through difficult terrain, including numerous tunnels and bridges.
