Gangadhar Meher (1862–1924), popularly known as Swabhaba Kabi, was one of the most influential and original poets in Odia literature. He was born in Barpali, present-day Bargarh district of Odisha, into a humble Bhulia weaver family. Despite financial hardships and very limited formal education (up to Standard V), he developed a deep interest in literature through self-learning and exposure to classical Odia and Sanskrit texts.
From a young age, he balanced education with family responsibilities, assisting in weaving while continuing his studies. He was deeply influenced by works like the Jagamohana Ramayana, Odia Mahabharata, and Sanskrit classics such as Raghuvamsham. His poetic talent emerged early, leading him to become a judicial Moharir (accountant) under the local zamindar, where his honesty and dedication earned him promotions and respect.

- Gangadhar Meher was born in 1862 into an Odia Bhulia weaver family.
- His father, Chaitanya Meher, worked as a village Vaidya (Ayurvedic doctor) alongside continuing the family profession of weaving. However, due to limited income from these occupations, he also started a small village school and began teaching a few children to support the family

- He was married at the young age of 10. Due to his family’s poor financial condition, he had to balance education with responsibilities, attending school in the morning and assisting his father in weaving during the afternoon. His neat and clear handwriting also became a source of income, as people often requested him to copy documents. Despite some improvement in the family’s financial condition, they later suffered a setback when their ancestral house was destroyed in a fire.

- Gangadhar Meher began his professional career when the Zamindar of Barpali, Lal Nruparaj Singh, appointed him as an Amin (Patwari). Recognizing his honesty and good conduct, he was later promoted to the post of Moharir. He served in this position across several places, including Sambalpur, Bijepur, and Padmapur, before being transferred back to his native place Barpali. He worked on a modest salary of around ₹30 per month.

- In his later life, he became socially active and progressive in his outlook. He organized an All Odisha Social Conference of the Meher community, bringing together nearly three thousand members from different regions. In this conference, he presented twelve reform proposals aimed at uplifting the weaving community, all of which were unanimously accepted.

- Gangadhar Meher began composing poetry at a very young age. His early works followed the traditional style of Odia literature, and his first notable work was Rasa-Ratnakara. Later, encouraged by friends, he adopted a more modern poetic style. His literary talent was highly praised by Kabibara Radhanath Ray.
- His writings are known for their vivid imagination, clarity of language, innovative style, strong character portrayal, and rich descriptions of nature.
