Gurmehar Kaur - A Lifestory

Gurmehar Kaur is an Indian activist and author known for her outspoken views on freedom of speech and social justice issues. She gained widespread attention in 2017 after posting a Facebook profile picture holding a placard that read, "I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. Save Democracy." This act, in response to violence on the Delhi University campus, propelled her into the national spotlight and triggered a massive debate about nationalism, free speech, and dissent in India. Prior to this incident, Kaur had already been involved in peace activism, having started a campaign called "Profile for Peace" to promote understanding between India and Pakistan, inspired by the loss of her father, Captain Mandeep Singh, who died in the Kargil War.

Following the online backlash and threats she received after her Facebook post, Kaur temporarily withdrew from her studies at Delhi University. However, she continued to advocate for her beliefs through various platforms, including writing. She is the author of the book "Small Acts of Freedom," a memoir that explores her personal journey, her father's sacrifice, and her commitment to peace and social change. Kaur has also been a vocal critic of intolerance and hate speech, using her platform to raise awareness about issues affecting marginalized communities and to encourage young people to engage in civic discourse. Despite facing considerable criticism and online abuse, she remains a prominent voice in the Indian activist landscape, inspiring many with her courage and unwavering dedication to her principles.
