His work focused on deciphering the genetic code, the system by which genetic information is encoded in DNA and RNA and used to synthesize proteins. Khorana and his team meticulously synthesized artificial genes with specific, repeating sequences of nucleotides. By observing which amino acids were incorporated into proteins based on these artificial genes, they were able to determine which sequences of nucleotides corresponded to which amino acids.
This monumental achievement, accomplished in collaboration with Marshall Nirenberg and Robert W. Holley, earned them the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1968. Khorana's work was crucial in understanding how genetic information is translated into the proteins that carry out essential functions in living cells. Beyond the Nobel Prize, Khorana continued his research, focusing on the synthesis of functional genes. He successfully synthesized the first artificial gene in 1972, a significant milestone in genetic engineering.
