He gave his whole life to help, and he left a big mark on the country's history. Born in 1888, he chose to always follow Mahatma Gandhi's ideas. He joined the fight for freedom in the early 1920s, a time when people were very determined to resist. He was very important in the Non Cooperation Movement, the Civil Disobedience Movement, and the Quit India Movement. He was put in jail and faced hard times with many others. He was the President of the Indian National Congress during the important years of 1946 and 1947, helping the party get ready for freedom. He was there during the Partition of India, a time of great sadness and trouble. Later, he became involved in politics in the new India. He often spoke out against the government and was not afraid to say what he thought. He was known for being honest and caring a lot about the well being of ordinary people. People like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel often asked him for advice. His devotion to his ideas and his hard work for India made the country respect him. He died in 1982, but his memory still encourages people.
