Jagannatha Dasa was a prominent figure in the Haridasa tradition, a devotional movement within Hinduism that flourished in Karnataka, India. Born in the 18th century, he is revered as a saint, philosopher, and composer of devotional songs. His birth name was Venkata Ramanacharya. He demonstrated a keen intellect and a deep interest in spiritual matters from a young age, mastering Sanskrit and Kannada literature, grammar, and philosophy.

Driven by a profound spiritual yearning, he embarked on a quest for enlightenment, eventually becoming a disciple of Gopala Dasa, a renowned Haridasa saint. Under his guru's guidance, Venkata Ramanacharya embraced the Haridasa path, renouncing worldly possessions and dedicating his life to the propagation of devotion to Lord Vishnu. His guru bestowed upon him the name Jagannatha Dasa, signifying his unwavering devotion to Lord Jagannatha, a form of Vishnu worshipped in Puri, Odisha.

Jagannatha Dasa dedicated his life to composing and propagating devotional songs known as devaranamas. His compositions, written in simple yet profound Kannada, resonated with the common people, conveying complex philosophical concepts in an accessible manner. He authored numerous devaranamas praising Lord Vishnu and elucidating the principles of Vaishnava philosophy. His most celebrated work is the Harikathamrutasara, a comprehensive exposition of the Dvaita philosophy of Madhvacharya, presented in a poetic and engaging style. It is considered a masterpiece of Kannada literature and a cornerstone of Haridasa literature.
