Muthuvel Karunanidhi, widely known as Kalaignar, was a towering figure in Indian politics, particularly in the state of Tamil Nadu. Born on June 3, 1924, in Thirukkuvalai, a village in the Nagapattinam district, he rose from humble beginnings to become one of the state's most influential and longestserving Chief Ministers. His journey began in his youth, fueled by a passion for social justice and equality, leading him to actively participate in the antiHindi agitations and the Dravidian movement spearheaded by Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and C.N. Annadurai. This early involvement shaped his political ideology, deeply rooted in principles of rationalism, social reform, and Tamil nationalism.
Karunanidhi's political career spanned over seven decades, during which he held various positions within the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a party he cofounded. His policies focused on social welfare, economic growth, and the promotion of Tamil language and culture. He was known for his progressive initiatives, including land reforms, reservation policies, and schemes aimed at uplifting marginalized communities.
Beyond politics, Karunanidhi was a prolific writer and a skilled orator. He penned numerous novels, plays, screenplays, and poems, many of which addressed social issues and celebrated Tamil heritage. His writing style was known for its wit, eloquence, and ability to connect with the common people. His contributions to Tamil literature and cinema earned him the title "Kalaignar," meaning artist or scholar.
