Voice For Women, Verses For Change, Visionary Poet
Kamini Roy was a pioneering Bengali poet, social worker, and feminist in British India. Born in 1864 into a prominent Bengali family in Bakerganj district (now in Bangladesh), her progressive upbringing fostered a love for literature and intellectual pursuits. She excelled academically, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in Sanskrit from Bethune College, Calcutta, in 1886. This achievement was particularly significant, as she was one of the first women to graduate with honors in British India, breaking down societal barriers and inspiring other women to pursue higher education.
Following graduation, Kamini Roy became a teacher at Bethune College, dedicating herself to educating young women. However, her true passion lay in writing. Her poetry, characterized by its lyrical beauty and profound themes of social justice, female empowerment, and the human condition, quickly gained recognition. Her first collection of poems, "Alo O Chhaya" (Light and Shadow), published in 1889, established her as a significant voice in Bengali literature. Beyond her literary contributions, Kamini Roy was a dedicated social worker and advocate for women's rights.
