Kittu Chennamma, a name etched in the annals of Indian history, stands as a symbol of courage, resistance, and unwavering patriotism. Born in Kakati, a small village in presentday Karnataka, India, in 1778, she belonged to the Lingayat community. From a young age, Chennamma displayed exceptional skills in horse riding, sword fighting, and archery, setting her apart from her peers. She married Raja Mallasarja of Kittur, becoming the queen of the princely state. However, her marital bliss was shortlived, as she lost her husband in 1824, leaving her with the responsibility of ruling Kittur and protecting its sovereignty.

The British East India Company, with its expansionist policies, saw Kittur as a valuable territory to annex. Exploiting the Doctrine of Lapse, which allowed the British to annex kingdoms without a natural heir, they attempted to seize Kittur. Chennamma, refusing to cede her kingdom, bravely challenged the British. In 1824, she led her forces against the British army, inflicting a significant defeat upon them in the first AngloKittur War. She killed St John Thackeray, the Collector and Political Agent of the British. This victory reverberated across the region, inspiring other rulers to resist British rule.

However, the British, determined to subdue Kittur, launched a larger offensive. Despite her valiant efforts and the unwavering support of her people, Chennamma was eventually defeated in 1824. She was captured and imprisoned at Bailhongal Fort, where she spent the remaining years of her life. Chennamma died on February 21, 1829, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and resistance. Her story continues to inspire generations of Indians, reminding them of the importance of courage, selfrespect, and the fight against injustice. Kittu Chennamma remains a revered figure, celebrated as one of the first female rulers to challenge British authority in India.
