Empowering Landless, Uplifting Women: A True Champion Of Social Justice
A shining light and hard working helper for the poor people in India who had no land, she gave her life to fighting unfairness. She was born into a simple family and saw the problems of people pushed to the side, which made her want to change things. Think of someone from a movie like "Mother India," but her story was real and full of action. She and her husband were moved by the ideas of being peaceful and able to take care of yourself, like Gandhi taught. They started helping those who needed it most. Their work was like what you see in films about people who change society. They started Land for Tillers' Freedom (LAFTI) in 1981. It helped give land to those who had none, so they could live better lives. She wanted to give people respect and make things more fair. Like Nelson Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world," and she knew that having land and chances was important. Because she worked so hard for what was right, she won many awards, like the Right Livelihood Award in 2008. This showed that she was a true hero for those who had nothing.
