Kuldip Nayar (14 August 1923 – 23 August 2018) was an eminent Indian journalist, author, human rights activist, and diplomat known for his fearless political commentary and lifelong commitment to peace. Born in Sialkot, Punjab, British India, into a Punjabi Sikh family, he completed his schooling at Murray College and went on to earn a B.A. (Hons.) from Forman Christian College and an LL.B. from Law College, Lahore. In 1952, he pursued journalism at the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University, USA, on a scholarship. Beginning as an Urdu press reporter, he rose to become Editor of The Statesman’s Delhi edition and was arrested during the Emergency (1975–77) for his outspoken criticism of the government. In 1978, he founded the Editors Guild of India.
Nayar also served in key diplomatic and political roles, including High Commissioner to the UK (1990), member of India’s UN delegation (1996), and Rajya Sabha nominee (1997). A staunch Indo-Pak peace advocate, he initiated candlelight vigils at the Wagah Border and inspired cross-border friendship movements. His columns appeared in over 80 newspapers in 14 languages, and he authored more than 15 books, including Beyond the Lines. Honored with the Astor Award for Press Freedom (2003), Shaheed Niyogi Memorial Award (2007), Ramnath Goenka Jeevan Gaurav Award (2015), and the Padma Bhushan (posthumous, 2019), he continued promoting peace until his last days, flagging off the Aman-Dosti Yatra just days before his death at 95. His ashes were immersed in the Ravi River near Lahore, symbolizing his enduring vision for harmony between India and Pakistan.
