Kuriakose Elias Chavara, a prominent figure in the history of the Catholic Church in India, was born in Kainakary, Kerala, on February 10, 1805. His early life was marked by a strong inclination towards religious studies. He began his formal priestly training at the age of 13 in the seminary at Pallipuram, where he immersed himself in theology, philosophy, and classical languages. After completing his rigorous studies, he was ordained a priest in 1829. Recognizing the need for religious and social reform within the Syrian Catholic community, Kuriakose Elias Chavara, along with two other priests, founded the Congregation of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) in 1831. This indigenous religious order aimed to revitalize the Catholic faith and promote education, particularly among marginalized communities.

Chavara's contributions extended significantly beyond the founding of the CMI. He played a pivotal role in establishing a printing press in Mannanam, which facilitated the publication of religious and educational materials in Malayalam, the local language. This initiative greatly enhanced literacy and access to knowledge for the common people. Furthermore, he spearheaded the establishment of schools attached to churches, making education accessible to children regardless of their caste or social standing. He is also credited with introducing the practice of "a school for every church," a revolutionary concept that transformed the educational landscape of Kerala. Kuriakose Elias Chavara dedicated his life to serving God and humanity, leaving behind a legacy of selfless service, educational reform, and spiritual leadership. He passed away on January 3, 1871, and was beatified in 1986 and canonized as a saint by Pope Francis in 2014, solidifying his place as a revered figure in the Catholic Church.
