Lakshman Nayak was an Indian tribal freedom fighter and a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement, particularly in the state of Odisha. Born in Tentuligumma village of Koraput district, his early life was marked by the traditional tribal customs and practices of his community. Witnessing the exploitation and injustice faced by his people under British rule, Nayak became deeply involved in the Congress party's activities, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's call for Swaraj. He emerged as a charismatic leader, mobilizing tribal communities against oppressive forest laws and unfair taxation.

Nayak played a pivotal role in the Salt Satyagraha movement in the Koraput region, organizing protests and defying British authority. His efforts to raise awareness and galvanize support for the freedom struggle led to his arrest on multiple occasions. He consistently advocated for the rights of the tribal population, fighting against their marginalization and demanding fair treatment. Tragically, his involvement in a protest in 1942 resulted in a violent clash with the police, leading to the death of a forest guard. Nayak was falsely accused of murder and subsequently sentenced to death. Despite maintaining his innocence, he was hanged in Berhampur Jail on March 29, 1943. Lakshman Nayak is remembered as a martyr and a symbol of tribal resistance against colonial rule, his sacrifice inspiring generations of freedom fighters and social activists in Odisha and beyond. His legacy continues to be celebrated as a testament to the courage and determination of marginalized communities in the struggle for Indian independence.
