Lokanath Bal was an Indian independence activist and a member of the Bengal Volunteers, a revolutionary group. Born in 1905 in Chittagong (now in Bangladesh), Bal's early life was marked by a growing resentment towards British colonial rule. He became drawn to the revolutionary ideals that were sweeping through Bengal, inspired by figures like Subhas Chandra Bose and the stories of earlier uprisings. He joined the Bengal Volunteers, a group known for its daring raids and assassinations aimed at undermining the British administration.

Bal played a crucial role in the Chittagong armoury raid of 1930, a meticulously planned operation led by Surya Sen, also known as Masterda. The raid involved seizing the armouries of the police and auxiliary forces in Chittagong, with the objective of disrupting British control and inspiring a wider rebellion. Bal was instrumental in the initial success of the raid, bravely participating in the capture of the armouries.

Following the raid, Bal and his fellow revolutionaries faced intense pursuit by the British authorities. They engaged in several armed encounters, demonstrating remarkable courage and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds. He evaded capture for a significant period, living underground and continuing to agitate against British rule. Eventually, he was apprehended and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment.

While incarcerated, Bal remained committed to the cause of Indian independence. He participated in hunger strikes and other forms of protest to demand better treatment for political prisoners and to highlight the injustices of colonial rule. After India gained independence in 1947, Bal was released from prison. He dedicated the remainder of his life to social service and remained a respected figure in the Indian independence movement. Lokanath Bal passed away in 1964, leaving behind a legacy of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the freedom of India.
