Mahadevi Verma - A Lifestory
Voice Of Women, Champion Of Freedom, Poet Of Shadows

A big name in Hindi writing, she was more than just a poet. She spoke up for women's rights and was important in India's culture. Born in 1907, her life saw big changes in society and politics. She watched India fight for freedom and become a new country. People called her the "Modern Meera" because her poems, like sad movie scenes, showed love, hurt, and strong feelings. She did more than just write poems. She helped fight for independence, agreeing with leaders like Mahatma Gandhi. You could see her as the "Mother India" of Hindi poems, guarding her culture and wanting to fix society. She was a main person in the Chhayavad movement, a time of love in Hindi poems. With others like Jaishankar Prasad and Suryakant Tripathi 'Nirala', she stopped using old styles. She used free verse and looked at people's feelings. Her words touched people dealing with a fastchanging world. Her work still inspires writers and readers today, over a hundred years after she was born. She got the Jnanpith Award in 1982.
