Maniram Dewan was a prominent figure in Assam's history, known for his entrepreneurial spirit and eventual role in the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. Born into a Kayastha family, he initially served the British East India Company with distinction, rapidly rising through the ranks due to his intelligence and understanding of the local landscape. He proved invaluable in managing revenue collection and establishing tea gardens, showcasing his business acumen and contributing significantly to the burgeoning tea industry in Assam. His loyalty and efficiency were initially rewarded, and he accumulated considerable wealth and influence.

However, a growing disillusionment with the British administration began to take root within him. He observed the increasing exploitation of the local population and the imposition of policies that undermined the traditional Assamese social structure. This resentment fueled his desire for greater autonomy and selfgovernance for Assam. When the Sepoy Mutiny erupted in 1857, Maniram Dewan saw an opportunity to overthrow the British and restore the Ahom monarchy. He secretly corresponded with Kandarpeswar Singha, a descendant of the Ahom royal family, and orchestrated a plan to instigate a rebellion in Assam.

Unfortunately for Dewan, the British authorities discovered his conspiracy. He was arrested and charged with treason. Despite his efforts to defend himself, he was found guilty and sentenced to death. In 1858, Maniram Dewan was publicly hanged in Jorhat, becoming a martyr for the cause of Assamese nationalism. His execution served as a stark reminder of the consequences of challenging British rule, but it also ignited a spirit of resistance that would continue to shape Assam's political landscape in the years to come. His legacy endures as a symbol of courage, entrepreneurship, and a deepseated love for his homeland.
