Maveeran KoneFamily Tree and Lifestory - iMeUsWe

Maveeran Alagumuthu Kone was not only an early freedom fighter but also a royal figure from the Konar (Yadava) clan, with deep ancestral ties to the Pandiyan kingdom of Tamilakam. Born in Kattalankulam, Tamil Nadu, he belonged to the Aayar (Yadava) warrior clan, whose forefathers had loyally served the Pandiyan kings. At just 22, following his father’s death in battle, Alagumuthu Kone ascended the throne of Kattalankulam and became a key military leader in Ettayapuram. From 1750 to 1759, he led one of India’s earliest organized uprisings against British colonial rule, refusing to submit to their unjust tax policies. In 1755, he secured a significant victory against British forces led by Colonel Heron, in alliance with the Travancore army. However, in 1759, he was betrayed and captured by Khan Sahib (Maruthanayagam Pillai). Despite enduring brutal torture, he stood firm, refused to pay taxes or betray his people, and was executed by cannon fire—becoming India’s first martyr in the freedom struggle, nearly a century before 1857.

Alagumuthu Kone’s legacy is a testament to his unyielding patriotism and selfless courage. His martyrdom was etched in stone inscriptions at Nadukaattur, rediscovered by historians long after his time. In recognition of his sacrifice, a documentary was released in 2012, and the Government of India issued a commemorative postage stamp in 2015. Today, annual state tributes in Tamil Nadu honor him, ensuring his story lives on as a symbol of India’s earliest resistance—a forgotten flame of freedom reignited for generations to come.
