A well known person in Indian social work is known for always caring about fairness and protecting nature. From 01 January 1980 on, she became a main voice for those pushed aside, especially those forced to move because of big building projects. She became widely known as the main organizer of the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA), a group that fought against building dams on the Narmada River and stood up for the rights of the people affected. Her work with the NBA, around the time when movies like Gandhi were affecting how people thought about society, showed how much she believed in peaceful resistance and everyone taking part in democracy. Besides the Narmada problem, she has been very involved in other social movements, supporting land rights, taking care of the environment, and the rights of people living in slums.
