lifestory

Meher Baba, born Merwan Sheriar Irani on February 25, 1894, in Pune, India, was an Indian spiritual master who claimed to be the Avatar of the age. His father, Sheriar Irani, was a Persian Zoroastrian who had settled in India. From a young age, Merwan exhibited a unique spiritual sensitivity, experiencing profound mystical experiences. He attended Deccan College in Pune, where he was known for his charm, intelligence, and interest in poetry. However, his life took a dramatic turn at the age of 19 when he encountered Hazrat Babajan, a Muslim saint, who kissed him on the forehead, triggering a spiritual transformation that would last for seven years.

Following his encounter with Babajan, Merwan sought guidance from other spiritual figures, including Sai Baba of Shirdi, Upasni Maharaj, and Tajuddin Baba. These masters played significant roles in shaping his spiritual understanding and preparing him for his future mission. In 1922, at the age of 28, Merwan began gathering his own disciples and adopted the name Meher Baba, meaning "Compassionate Father." He established an ashram near Ahmednagar, India, which became the center of his activities.

From July 10, 1925, Meher Baba maintained silence for the rest of his life, communicating primarily through an alphabet board, and later through hand gestures. He explained that his silence was a spiritual exercise and that, when he broke it, the world would experience a spiritual awakening. Throughout his life, Meher Baba traveled extensively, both in India and abroad, spreading his message of love and unity. He attracted followers from diverse backgrounds and cultures, emphasizing the importance of selfless service, compassion, and the realization of one's true self. Meher Baba established numerous charitable institutions, including schools, hospitals, and shelters for the poor. He died on January 31, 1969, in Meherazad, India, leaving behind a legacy of love and spiritual teachings that continue to inspire people around the world.
