Mithun Chakraborty's birth name is Gouranga Chakraborty was born on June 16, 1950, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal. His father was a Basantokumar Chakraborty and his mother was a Santirani Chakraborty.

• He completed his early education at Oriental Seminary, Kolkata, West Bengal.
• Mithun graduated with a degree in Chemistry from Scottish Church College, Kolkata.
• He pursued his acting education at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, earning a diploma in acting. This institute is renowned for producing many notable actors and filmmakers in India.

• In 1976, Mithun made his acting debut in Mrinal Sen's critically acclaimed film Mrigayaa, portraying a tribal man.
• In 1982, He starred in Babbar Subhash's musical drama Disco Dancer, where his portrayal of a street performer turned disco sensation made him a Bollywood superstar and a global icon of the disco era.

He first married actress Helena Luke in 1979, but after four months of marriage, the couple separated and filed for divorce.

• In February 2014, Mithun Chakraborty was nominated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament candidate for the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) during the West Bengal Rajya Sabha Assembly Polls.
• He officially became a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha on  February 7, 2014.
• On December 26, 2016, Chakraborty resigned from his position as a Rajya Sabha MP.
• On March 7, 2021, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election.
