Mohammed Dewji - A Lifestory
From Parliament To Business, An Impactful African Leader
Mohammed Dewji is a Tanzanian businessman, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and politician. Born in Singida, Tanzania, on May 8, 1975, he hails from a family with a strong business background. Dewji received his early education in Tanzania before pursuing higher education in the United States, where he graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in International Business and Finance.
Upon returning to Tanzania, Dewji joined his family's business, the Mohammed Enterprises Tanzania Limited (METL), a conglomerate involved in various sectors including manufacturing, agriculture, trading, finance, and real estate. Under his leadership, METL experienced significant growth and expansion, becoming one of the largest and most successful companies in East Africa. Dewji is credited with transforming METL from a trading company into a diversified industrial conglomerate.
Beyond his business acumen, Dewji has also been involved in politics. He served as a Member of Parliament for Singida Urban constituency from 2005 to 2015. During his tenure, he focused on initiatives aimed at improving education, healthcare, and infrastructure in his constituency. His commitment to public service earned him recognition and respect within the Tanzanian political landscape.
Dewji is also known for his philanthropic endeavors. Through the Mo Dewji Foundation, he supports various initiatives in education, health, and community development across Tanzania. In October 2018, Dewji was kidnapped in Dar es Salaam but was thankfully released after nine days. This incident brought international attention to his profile and highlighted the risks faced by prominent business figures in the region. Despite this challenging experience, Dewji has remained committed to his business ventures and philanthropic activities, continuing to contribute to the economic and social development of Tanzania.
