Muhammad Mahabat Khan III was a prominent figure in the history of British India, serving as the Nawab of Junagadh. He ascended to the throne in 1911, inheriting a princely state steeped in tradition and navigating the complexities of British rule. His reign was marked by significant efforts to modernize Junagadh, implementing administrative reforms and infrastructure development projects. He focused on improving the lives of his subjects through initiatives in education, healthcare, and public works.

Beyond internal affairs, Mahabat Khan III faced the growing pressures of Indian independence. As the British Raj began to crumble, he was confronted with the crucial decision of choosing between aligning with the newly independent India or opting for accession to Pakistan. This decision became particularly contentious due to Junagadh's unique geographical location. While the state itself was predominantly Hindu, its ruler was Muslim, leading to conflicting desires and ultimately, a period of significant political turmoil.

His eventual decision to accede to Pakistan in 1947 sparked widespread protests and unrest within Junagadh. India, viewing the accession as a threat to its territorial integrity and stability in the region, intervened militarily. Faced with mounting pressure and internal revolt, Mahabat Khan III, along with his family, fled to Pakistan. The Indian government subsequently held a plebiscite, which overwhelmingly favored integration with India, effectively ending his rule over Junagadh. He remained in Pakistan until his death, a figure remembered for his controversial decision and the dramatic events that unfolded during the partition era.
