Champion of Tamil Pride, Visionary in Politics and Cinema

Murasoli Maran (17 August 1934 – 23 November 2003) was a prominent Indian politician, journalist, social activist, and cultural contributor. Born in Thirukkuvalai, Tamil Nadu, he was the nephew of DMK leader M. Karunanidhi. After completing his education at Pachaiyappa’s College and Madras Law College, Maran became actively involved in DMK politics and journalism, editing the Tamil daily Murasoli and the English weekly The Rising Sun. He was a strong advocate for the Tamil language and culture, opposing Hindi imposition and participating in the 1965 anti-Hindi agitation.
Maran served as a Member of Parliament for 36 years in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, holding several Union Cabinet portfolios, including Urban Development, Industry, and Commerce & Industry. Apart from politics, he made significant contributions to Tamil cinema as a screenwriter, producer, and director, earning accolades such as Kalai-Mamani and multiple Tamil Nadu Government Best Feature Film awards. He was married to Mallika and had three children: Dayanidhi, Kalanithi, and Anbukarasi. Maran passed away on 23 November 2003, leaving behind a legacy as a visionary leader, cultural advocate, and champion of Tamil pride.
