Neera Arya Family Tree

Neera Arya was an Indian National Army (INA) soldier who fought for India's independence from British rule. Born in 1902 in Uttar Pradesh, she was also known as 'Veerangana' Neera Arya. She married Shrikant Sharma, an officer in British India. Inspired by Subhas Chandra Bose's call for complete independence and his formation of the INA, Neera joined the Rani of Jhansi Regiment, the women's regiment of the INA. This regiment was a unique and bold initiative, aiming to directly engage women in the armed struggle for freedom.

Neera Arya's story is steeped in bravery and sacrifice. A widely circulated, though potentially apocryphal, account narrates an incident where she allegedly saved her husband's life, even though he was tasked with assassinating Subhas Chandra Bose. According to the story, Shrikant Sharma, under orders from the British, attempted to kill Bose. Neera, learning of this plot, intervened and reportedly killed her husband to protect Bose. While the factual accuracy of this specific incident is debated, it has become a central part of her legendary status, symbolizing her unwavering dedication to the Indian cause.

Following India's independence, Neera Arya faced hardship. She was imprisoned and subjected to harsh treatment for her association with the INA. After her release, she lived a life of relative obscurity and poverty. Despite the challenges she faced, Neera remained steadfast in her patriotism and her commitment to the ideals of freedom and justice. She passed away in Hyderabad in 1998. Neera Arya's life, whether based on documented fact or embellished by folklore, serves as an inspiring tale of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to the nation. She is remembered as a symbol of the women who participated in the Indian independence movement and a testament to the sacrifices made for freedom.
