A key person in Indian theater put all her effort into helping grow the art of plays, mostly in Punjab. She was born in Ireland in 1876. In 01 January 1911, she came to India and quickly made big changes. The plays at that time were big and copied Western styles. She wanted plays to be about Indian stories and told in a simple, real way. Think about a time when plays in India were mostly like what the British liked. She came in and helped make something new. She did more than just work on plays. She was a great drama teacher, and she helped many actors and play writers. In the 1920s, she started a community in Kangra Valley. It was a place where artists could live and work together, helping each other be creative. It was like a place for artists to get away, like the well known artist places in Europe, but based in India. She was known for saying, "The play is the thing!" This saying shows how much she thought plays could show and change society. A big name in Indian movies and plays was one of her students, showing how long her effect lasted. She was not just teaching plays; she was helping Indian culture grow again. She kept working in theater until she died in 01 January 1971, leaving behind a lively play scene in Punjab.
