Obaid Siddiqi - A Lifestory
Pioneering Biologist, Driving Indian Research Forward, Shaping Scientific Future

A person known for very important biology work is also an Indian National Research Professor. Like a good movie, their life has had many changes and great success. Think of science before their work, it was very different. Born on 15 January 1932, their work on genes and behavior is seen as very important. In 1962, they started the Molecular Biology Unit at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). This was a big and new project, like the Apollo 11 mission, pushing what people thought was possible. In 2003, a fellow worker said, "Their focus on understanding the brain is amazing." Their long research has taught us a lot about how genes control behavior, using fruit flies. It's like watching actors to understand a play – they looked closely at small things to understand big things. Their work still inspires new scientists, so their help will be remembered for many years. This person passed away on 26 July 2013.
