Palwankar Baloo was a prominent Indian cricketer during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period when caste discrimination significantly impacted the sport. He rose to fame as a leftarm orthodox spin bowler, renowned for his accuracy, guile, and ability to extract considerable turn from the pitches. Born into a Dalit family, Baloo faced systemic prejudice that limited his opportunities despite his exceptional talent. He initially worked as a groundsman at the Poona Club, where his bowling skills were noticed by European cricketers.

Baloo's breakthrough came with the Hindu Gymkhana, a team representing the Hindu community in Bombay's quadrangular cricket tournament.
