Pandit Joshi - A Lifestory

A giant of Indian music, Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi, was a master of the Hindustani classical singing style. His life's work, over many years, made him one of the best singers of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Born on February 4, 1922, in Gadag, Karnataka, he started learning music when he was young, learning from many teachers, including Pandit Sawai Gandharva. He became famous for his skill in the Kirana Gharana style, known for its deep melodies and strong feelings. He was known for his very long and powerful alap, the part of a classical performance where the singer improvises, keeping his listeners captivated for hours. His recordings are very precious to many music fans. He won many awards during his career, including the Padma Bhushan in 1972, the Padma Vibhushan in 1985, and the Bharat Ratna, India's top civilian award, in 2008.
