Justice For All, Integrity Embodied: India'S Inaugural Lokpal

Pinaki Chandra Ghose is a retired Indian judge who served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of India. Born on May 28, 1952, he comes from a distinguished legal family, with his father, Justice Sambhu Chandra Ghose, having also served as a judge of the Calcutta High Court. Justice Ghose received his early education in Kolkata and subsequently obtained his law degree from the University of Calcutta. He enrolled as an advocate in 1976 and practiced primarily in the Calcutta High Court, specializing in company law, arbitration, and constitutional matters. His expertise and dedication to the legal profession led to his elevation as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court in 1997.
During his tenure at the Calcutta High Court, Justice Ghose handled a wide range of cases, demonstrating his judicial acumen and commitment to upholding the principles of justice. He was later transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2012, where he served as the Chief Justice. His experience and reputation for integrity led to his appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court of India in 2013. As a Supreme Court judge, Justice Ghose was involved in several landmark judgments, contributing significantly to the development of Indian jurisprudence. He retired from the Supreme Court in May 2017. Following his retirement, he was appointed as a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Subsequently, he was appointed as the first Lokpal of India, the anticorruption ombudsman, a position he held until his retirement in May 2022. His career reflects a long and dedicated service to the Indian judiciary and a commitment to public service.
