Potti Sreeramulu was a prominent Indian independence activist and social reformer, primarily remembered for his sacrifice that led to the formation of Andhra Pradesh as a separate state. Born in Madras Presidency, British India, Sreeramulu dedicated his life to various causes, most notably the upliftment of the marginalized sections of society and the promotion of Gandhian principles. He was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and actively participated in the Indian independence movement, enduring imprisonment on multiple occasions for his involvement in Satyagraha campaigns. He was a staunch advocate for the eradication of untouchability and worked tirelessly to provide access to education and basic necessities for the Dalits.

Sreeramulu's unwavering commitment to social justice extended to his efforts to promote Khadi and selfsufficiency in villages. He believed in empowering rural communities and fostering economic independence through the adoption of indigenous industries. However, his most significant contribution came in the form of his fastuntodeath demanding the creation of a separate state for the Teluguspeaking population. This demand stemmed from the perceived neglect and marginalization of Telugu speakers within the Madras State.

Driven by the desire to protect the linguistic and cultural identity of the Telugu people, Sreeramulu embarked on a hunger strike in 1952. His fast lasted for 58 days, culminating in his death, which ignited widespread protests and unrest throughout the region. The immense public pressure exerted by the agitations ultimately compelled the Indian government to concede to the demand, leading to the formation of Andhra Pradesh in 1953. Potti Sreeramulu is thus revered as "Amarajeevi" (Immortal Being) by the Telugu people for his selflessness and sacrifice in achieving statehood. His legacy continues to inspire social activists and advocates for linguistic rights across India.
