Pranavananda - A Lifestory

Pranavananda, also known as Thakur Pranavananda, was a prominent Hindu spiritual leader and social reformer in India during the 20th century. Born in Bajitpur, Faridpur district (now in Bangladesh) in 1896, his premonastic name was Binode Bihari Chakraborty. He displayed an early inclination towards spiritual pursuits and renunciation. At a young age, he left home in search of enlightenment and guidance. His spiritual journey led him to various ashrams and teachers, eventually culminating in his initiation into Sanyasa (monastic order) by Swami Govindananda Giri.
After receiving Sanyasa, he came to be known as Swami Pranavananda. He established the Bharat Sevashram Sangha in 1917, an organization dedicated to serving humanity and promoting Hindu Dharma. The Sangha aimed to uplift the underprivileged, spread education, provide medical assistance, and foster social harmony. Pranavananda emphasized the importance of character building, selfless service, and spiritual practice as essential components of a fulfilling life. He travelled extensively across India, inspiring people to embrace these ideals and work towards a better society.
Pranavananda was a strong advocate for Hindu unity and social reform. He actively campaigned against social evils such as untouchability and caste discrimination. He encouraged intercaste marriages and promoted the education of women. He believed that true progress could only be achieved through the collective effort of all sections of society. His teachings emphasized the inherent divinity in every individual and the importance of treating all beings with respect and compassion. Pranavananda passed away in 1941, leaving behind a legacy of selfless service, spiritual wisdom, and social reform that continues to inspire generations. The Bharat Sevashram Sangha, established by him, continues to carry out his mission of serving humanity and promoting Hindu Dharma across the globe.
