The person known as Rajaram II, a key but often missed figure in Kolhapur's past, was the Raja from 18 August 1866 until he died on 30 November 1870. - During a difficult time someone known as Rajaram II, also called Ramaraja, became the leader of the Marathas. He was in charge from 1749 to 1777. However, his time as leader was mostly symbolic because the Peshwas were gaining more and more power, effectively taking over how the Maratha kingdom was run.
- Born in 1726 he was introduced to Tarabai, the widow of Rajaram I, as Shivaji Maharaj's grandson. This was done to support her claim to power against Shahu I. Tarabai, who had been locked up by Shahu, freed Rajaram II and said he was the true heir. This caused a fight for power, which eventually led to the Treaty of Sangola in 01 January 1750.
- The Treaty of Sangola made the Peshwa's power even stronger. Rajaram II stayed the leader living in Satara, but the Peshwa became the real ruler, controlling the Maratha government and army. Rajaram II kept his ceremonial role, performing religious duties and giving symbolic approvals.
