Renuka Singh Thakur's journey from a small village in Himachal Pradesh to becoming a key player for the Indian women’s cricket team is a story of perseverance and passion. Growing up with limited resources and losing her father at a young age, she found support in her family, especially her mother and brother, who encouraged her to pursue cricket. Despite the lack of proper facilities in her hometown, Renuka's dedication led her to the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Academy, where her talent as a fast-medium bowler was honed. She quickly rose through the ranks, making her international debut in 2021. Renuka's standout performances, particularly at the 2022 Commonwealth Games where she became India’s leading wicket-taker, brought her recognition and established her as a rising star in Indian cricket. Her journey serves as an inspiration for many aspiring athletes.


Birth

Renuka Singh Thakur was born on January 2, 1996, in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. Her father, the Late Kehar Singh Thakur, worked in the Himachal Pradesh Irrigation and Public Health Department and her mother is Sunita Thakur.

Cricketing Journey

After her father died in 1999, Renuka became interested in cricket, playing near the Kundi Nullah in Rohru, Himachal Pradesh.

 

Her early exposure to cricket in her village nurtured her talent, and despite the challenges of growing up without her father, she continued to pursue her passion for the sport.

From Dharamshala Academy to State -Level Cricket

In 2009, Renuka enrolled at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association's women's residential academy in Dharamshala, encouraged by her uncle Bhupender Singh Thakur, a physical education teacher, and later played for the Himachal Pradesh Under-16 and Under-19 teams.

Education

Renuka attended G.S.S. School in Dharamshala and JAV Senior Secondary School in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh.

 

She graduated from Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar and later attended Khalsa College in Amritsar, Punjab, as well as Government College in Dharamshala.

Debut in Cricket

  • In 2019, she was selected by the BCCI for a women's one-day match and later chosen for India's women’s team for the Australia tour, where she also played against Bangladesh, Thailand, and India B, taking three wickets in four matches.
  • She made her "Women's Twenty20 International" (WT20I) debut on October 7, 2021, against Australia.
  • She made her "Women's One Day International" (WODI) debut on February 18, 2022, against New Zealand.
  • Renuka made her "Test" debut against England in December 2023.

Faces of Fame

  • Renuka was the leading wicket-taker in the "2019–20 Senior Women's One Day League," with 23 dismissals.

Anecdotes

  • Record-Breaking Knock: In 2017, Deepti scored 188* against Ireland, setting the record for the highest individual score by an Indian woman in ODIs. She also contributed to a record 320-run opening partnership with Poonam Raut.
  • From Ball Girl to Cricketer: Deepti’s journey began as a ball girl at her brother's cricket camp, where her talent was recognized. This encouragement led her to pursue cricket seriously and eventually represent India.
