Shaheen Mistri - A Lifestory
Empowering India'S Children Through Education: A Brighter Future For All

Shaheen Mistri is a prominent Indian social entrepreneur and educator, widely recognized for her pioneering work in transforming the landscape of education for underprivileged children in India. Her journey began at a young age when, during summer visits to India, she witnessed stark inequalities in access to quality education. This early exposure ignited a passion within her to address this critical issue and create opportunities for children from marginalized communities.
Driven by this vision, Mistri founded Akanksha Foundation in 1991 while still a student at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. Akanksha started as a small initiative with just 15 children in a single classroom. Under her leadership, it grew into a significant force, providing educational opportunities to thousands of children through afterschool centers and partnerships with municipal schools. Akanksha's innovative approach focused on holistic development, incorporating not only academic learning but also life skills, creative arts, and exposure to diverse experiences.
Building upon the success of Akanksha, Mistri later founded Teach For India in 2008, inspired by the Teach For America model. Teach For India recruits passionate and talented young graduates and professionals to commit two years to teaching in underresourced schools. This initiative aims to bridge the educational gap by providing quality teachers and fostering a movement of leaders committed to educational equity. Through Teach For India, Mistri has created a powerful platform for systemic change, impacting not only the lives of students but also shaping the perspectives of future leaders across various sectors.
Throughout her career, Shaheen Mistri has been a tireless advocate for children's rights and educational reform. Her dedication and innovative approaches have earned her numerous accolades and recognition, solidifying her position as a leading figure in the Indian education sector. Her work continues to inspire individuals and organizations to join the movement for equitable and quality education for all children in India.
