Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar was a highly influential Indian scientist, known primarily for his pivotal role in establishing scientific infrastructure and promoting research and development in newly independent India. Born in Bhera, Punjab, British India (now Pakistan), Bhatnagar displayed an early aptitude for science, coupled with a keen interest in poetry and the arts. He obtained his doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of London, after which he returned to India to dedicate his career to scientific advancement.
Bhatnagar's contributions spanned various fields, including colloid chemistry, magnetochemistry, and applied chemistry. He held several key positions, including Director of the University Chemical Laboratories in Lahore and later, the first DirectorGeneral of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). It was through the CSIR that Bhatnagar truly left his indelible mark. He was instrumental in establishing a network of national laboratories across India, covering diverse scientific disciplines, from physics and chemistry to metallurgy and fuel research.
