Shreeram Abhyankar - A Lifestory
Algebraic Geometry'S Architect: Innovating, Abstracting, Eternally Shaping Mathematical Landscapes

A very important person in math, especially in the area of algebraic geometry, was from both India and America. His life, like a good movie, had smart ideas, problems, and finally, success. He was born in Ujjain, India, in 01 January 1930. Even when he was young, you could see how smart he would become. He got his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 01 January 1955, with help from Oscar Zariski, a well known name in algebraic geometry. People quickly noticed his work, and he became known for his good ideas and new ways to solve hard problems. He is very famous for something called Abhyankar's guess about how certain groups act on a line, a problem that mathematicians worked on for many years. He did a lot for math, and his work still encourages mathematicians around the world. He was a professor at Purdue University from 01 January 1967 until he died in 01 January 2012. People who worked with him said he was a helpful teacher and loved doing research. He used to say, "Math is the most important science, and number theory is the most important part of math," which shows how much he loved the subject. His influence continues through his students, his books, and all the mathematicians he inspired.
